'Rapists hail from close to SA'
Ivor Price
London - The three men the British police brought to book on Thursday in
connection with kidnappings and rapes, are not South African as earlier
suspected, but hail from a country close to South Africa.
Informed sources close to the investigation said on Friday the suspects, who
have meanwhile been released on bail, hail from a neighbouring country to
South Africa. It seems that the police may not reveal their nationalities.
Possiblity South Africans still involved
But a police spokesperson emphasised there was still a vague possibility
that South Africans might have been involved in the five crimes that have
left Northampton's women terror-stricken.
Investigating officers have reason to believe the men, aged 19, 25 and 36
years respectively, who were released on bail, did not work alone.
At least 50 police officers are still working round the clock to arrest an
unknown number of men.
Not organised crime syndicate
The suspects are apparently not an organised crime syndicate, but a few
friends who in three separate attacks before 1 August kidnapped and raped
three women. It is claimed they also wanted to rape a girl, 15, and another
woman, but both escaped their clutches.
Sarah Thompson, spokesperson, said initially the search had been for South
African men because the victims were "convinced" that the attackers had
spoken in "heavy South African accents".
Afterwards the British media reported that a South African township
phenomenon - the "jackrollers" gang of the 1980s - might have surfaced in
Britain. This refers to a gang that kidnapped women to keep them as sex
slaves.
Foreign Affairs in the dark
South African Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ronnie Mamoepa,
said he did not know whether South Africans were involved in the attacks.
Some South African newspapers wrongly reported that three South African men
were being detained in Britain on charges of rape and abduction.
If this were later proved to be the case, the South African government would
contact the British through the South African high commission in London.
