Gov’t okays expansion of Noi Bai Airport
13:53' 23/05/2008 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge – The Government has approved a master zoning plan
to expand and develop the existing Noi Bai International Airport into
a big airport able to handle bigger aircraft and more air passengers
in the coming years.
Lai Xuan Thanh, deputy general director of the Civil Aviation
Administration of Vietnam, confirmed with the Daily that the plan had
just been endorsed by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, months
before construction of the second passenger terminal (T2) at the
airport.
According to the big-ticket plan, the international airport will have
at least two runways for modern aircraft including Boeing 747s and the
world's current biggest passenger plane Airbus A380 to land and take
off by 2020.
By that year, the airport will be able to receive 20-25mil passengers
and handle 260,000 tons of cargo or more per annum. The parking area
for aircraft will also be expanded to accommodate at least 29 planes
and 43 when the demand grows.
The plan also envisages developing facilities southward in accordance
with standards of the International Civil Aviation Association. The
new developments include one more runway and Terminal T3 to enable the
airport to receive 50mil passengers after 2030.
The plan needs over VND13tril (around US$803mil) between now and 2020,
and more than VND43tril for developments after that year.
The State budget and corporate investment will be the main capital
investment source for Noi Bai International Airport's new
developments, which will be carried out under different investment
forms.
Work is scheduled to start on the T2 terminal at the airport later
this year. The terminal estimated to cost nearly US$420mil is designed
to receive 10mil passengers a year.
The current terminal capable of handling six million passengers will
serve domestic flights when the second terminal is put into use in
October 2010.
Better infrastructures badly needed to support strong growth of the
country's aviation sector and economy. Earlier this year, the
Government approved projects to develop and expand Danang, Chu Lai and
Dong Hoi airports in Central Vietnam.
Nearly VND4.5tril (over US$278mil) will be spent expanding the parking
area at Danang International Airport for 21 aircraft in 2015 and 27 in
2025.
The investment is used to build a modern terminal capable of receiving
four million passengers a year and to improve the airport's cargo
handling capacity to 200,000 tons.
More than VND11.4tril (around US$709mil) will go to expanding the
parking area at Chu Lal International Airport for 25 aircraft in 2015
and 46 in 2025. By 2025, the airport in Quang Nam Province will have a
new terminal designed for 4.1mil passengers every year and five
million tons of cargo as against 1.5mil tons in 2015.
The Dong Hoi Airport will be modernized for Airbus A321 to land and
take off, and to handle 500,000 passengers per annum.
The Ministry of Transport has told Vietnam Airlines Corp. and its
partners to quicken a plan to establish a company to develop Long
Thanh International Airport for submission to the Government for
consideration and approval.
Domestic investors are expected to contribute 75% of the planned
company's chartered capital and the rest will be balanced by foreign
and public shareholders.
The planned airport will have four runways measuring 4,000 meters by
60 meters, which can accommodate modern aircraft including Air-bus
A380.
