Vietnam Airlines to sue passenger for bomb hoax
National carrier Vietnam Airlines said it will claim damages of
US$25,000 from a passenger who 'joked' about a bomb and held up
five flights last week.
Minutes before a flight was set to leave Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport for
the central Khanh Hoa province last Friday morning Nguyen Thai Son, 33,
said he had a bomb in his bag.
Flight attendants immediately delayed the flight and all 150 passengers
and their luggage were searched. Nothing was found.
Security guards, firefighters, ambulances, and bomb-disposal experts
were all rushed to the airport.
The caper delayed the flight by four hours and held up four other
flights as well.
An airlines official said Son, a sectional head at a Hanoi steel
company [a source previously said Son was a Hanoi tour guide], was an
educated man and the joke was thus inexcusable.
The airlines plans to invite experts to estimate the loss before suing
Son.

Flippant passenger holds up flight at Hanoi
A Vietnamese domestic flight delayed takeoff by several hours Friday
after a passenger jokingly told his neighbor he was carrying a bomb.
At 7am, as the Vietnam Airlines plane was about to leave Hanoi's Noi
Bai airport for Cam Ranh town in the central Khanh Hoa province, Nguyen
Thai Son was struggling with a large and apparently heavy bag.
When a man sitting next to him asked why he did not check in the bag,
Son replied, "Because I have a bomb inside".
Flight attendants immediately delayed the flight and all passengers and
their luggage were thoroughly searched. Nothing was found.
Son, a Hanoi tour guide, has been taken into custody, and authorities
are considering if criminal charges could be brought against him.
