Hi Grace. Thanks for your pacific answer. It's one of the first one I have
here for the last 10 days.
Actually as I understand it Usenet really has no rules.
It has. Read again what I post above.
There are rules. I know them. We can organise a moderation if you want, I
exactly know how it works as I am very active on usent for years now. Anyway
this newsgroup doesn't really need moderastion: it just has to reach
civilisation again and the troublemakers to stop their loot attitude. I
don't think this newsgroup needs more intervention than that.
Usenet is not a
place, it is not an organization, it is a nebulous entity that perhaps is
the best example of anarchy in action.
I promise it is not. Please read again my post about Usenet, the Netiquette,
Internet Provider TOS and involvings about the laws which occurs in the
country from where you post.
I expect to get flamed or to have disagreements on usenet, that is why I
have rarely ever posted on it in around 16 years of access.
I promise you miss a lot of things. Usenet is a wonderful tool, maybe coming
from the past, but full of information and obvioulsy a total richness for
thos who know hos to use it. And I assure you: there are rules to protect
you against punks and agressive flamers.
I'm ac active member of several newgrouyp on the internet for years: some of
them are technical, for the IT engineer I am. Some others are about sports
or cultures. In every cases, troubles makers are a total minority if they
really become annoying, it is not very difficult to push them away the time
the place starts to be usable again.
Of course you will have more difficulties inside an alt.* hierarchy. But as
we are inside the soc.*, we are under the rules specified by Usenet and the
Netiquette, and it is one more layer than those we agreeg from our providing
connection and the laws of the country from where we are posting.
as when I was called a racist the other day
This was quite a stupid answer, really showing the actual level of reactions
we can find in this place. I hope once everything will be back to normal and
agressivity will be away, you should be able to discuss more things here.
Anyway I just figure that if the skin is not at least a little thick or
things do not roll off easily, it is just better to let things go.
Yes and no. If you don't fight evil when you notice it, you promote him.
There are things we should ignore, and there are some we can't accept.
Anyway there's another solution for extreme cases, and it is called the
Plonk. The concept is quite easy ti understand: nobody can force you to read
someone you identified as a plague and a calamity. You can confugure your
news reader to ignore a particular poster (except if you use a web page
platform access). You just have to specify to your reader who you want to
ignore and you won't have to read post from this person as your reader won't
download them anymore. It is a much more wiser attitude than going to
situation like the one I found when I arrived: a war between 3 people, which
totally polluted the place. If people has problem with a user, they should
just ignore him and configure their readers to do not see him anymore.
Insult and agresssion usually come from people who are willing to flame and
to agress others. Most of the time they imagine they are in a parralele
world where they can do what they want, and they express their own
frustration to the constraints they have in their real life. But doing that,
they corrupt the newsgroup where they are, and sometimes, like here, it is
necessary to remind them the rules and practices. Insults and racism can't
be tolerated, privacy breakdown as well. I have a personal problem with
insults and racism in general.
So I summerize: there are rules in the internet and especially in Usenet's
newgroup. If somebody really upset you, it is possble to stop downloading
his messages and to ignore them. These 2 points are strong enough to avoid
personnal attacks and flamming, so those who do it shouldn't be tolerated.
It is as simple as that. And believe me, once things follow thses 2 lines, a
newsgroup becomes a much better place for everybody.
Peace.
