One wonders how Magnus Mort can use the description " although the PM
tried to refrain his true nature in front of a western journalist"?
Does this mean that Mortty attended Oxford and got to know the PM
while he was at school? Got to know all his little personal quirks? Or
perhaps he is a frequent invitee to the various get-to-gathers that
Abishit attends? A paid consultant to the Thai ministry?
Or perhaps the whole story is simply Mangus expressing his usual
French chauvinism and antagonism toward all things Thai that are so
blatantly evidenced in his posts to this group.
After all this is the bloke that when accused of not being able to get
laid in Thailand on a payday night..... did not disputed the fact.
As a Brit who has lived in a large number of countries ... wtf are you
talking about? There is nothing specifically French about the opinion in
question, although there is obviously some anti French bias in your
response.
Chauvinism:
1. Blind and absurd devotion to a fallen leader or an
obsolete cause; hence, absurdly vainglorious or
exaggerated patriotism.
[1913 Webster]
A little slow with the English comprehension today, eh?
Hardly - you wrote "French chauvinism". The meaning was pretty clear.
Of course there was nothing specifically French in the report I was
referring to Mangus Mort's obvious bias toward things Thai and
supposing a reason for it, and not anti French in any way. Anti Mort,
rather.
"French chauvinism to all things Thai", you wrote. I repeat, there was
nothing chauvinistic and/or specifically French in Mort's comment about
the
Rohingya issue.
You don't believe that the French can be chauvinistic?
What's that got to do with the price of fish? Blatant straw man.
Obviously every single nationality in the world has its share of chauvinism,
talk about stating the blindingly obvious.
Try travelingWhat are you on about? There are two official languages in Canada. How many
to Canada where there are French residents that refuse to speak
English. Or that France has a French language institute to prevent the
anglicizing of the "pure French language" by eliminating such
expressions as "le drugstore".
Canadian Anglos speak at least a smattering of French? A lot less than
Francophones who speak reasonable English. And Anglos abroad are by far the
biggest culprits in terms of unwillingness to attempt to speak the language
of the country they are visiting, thereby showing a minimum of respect.
Especially Yanks.
Language is part of culture. It is constantly evolving. There are those in
France who regret the increasing Anglicisation of the French language -
that's their prerogative. Most French don't give a monkey's, which is why
it's happening in the first place.
When the dominant cultures in the world in the not so distant future are
Asian - in terms of power, influence as well as numbers - we will likely see
a reverse in the trend in line with the diminishing influence of the US.
Or are you French?
Read my lips. "As a Brit who has lived in a large number of countries" (see
above).
On topic, I actually feel a bit sorry for the PM, he is rather out of
his
depth in some ways. It is obvious that certain things go on in Thailand,
always have done and will for the forseeable future, without political
assent. And Mort is correct in that this will certainly not change while
the
Democrats ... for want of a better word ... are in power.
I would doubt that the P.M. knew anything about it...until the shit
hit the fan, anyway. I'm fairly sure that the Police, Army,
Navy, whoever had instructions as to what to do with illegal immigrants
and did it.
Possibly. But he probably became aware of the practice at some point
before
it hit the media spotlight, and as usual in these situations it has since
become a damage limitation exercise that may well not have happened at all
otherwise.
Sort of like when the French President denied that any French
government agency was involved in the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior,
or to apportion fame equally, when the US President told us about the
Weapons of Mass Destruction and when the British PM agreed with him?
What's with this infatuation with the French?
And do you know what a tu quoque fallacy is? Whatever the French, Chinese,
Outer Mongolians may do in their ignorance on occasion doesn't invalidate
the original criticism of the Thai premier's actions in this instance.
If you don't believe that politicians are among the most adroit at
dancing and weaving to avoid the brown stuff when the shit hits the
fan then you probably don't read the newspapers either.
? Doh. What a completely daft and unsubstantiated comment to make.
