Sundaravej
|||Today 12:33 PM|Siamentinel
Here is an old piece from the IHT's Thomas Fuller. The analysis seems to be in
line with the Assumption poll that gives this government a short life
expectancy. With the naming of Samak Sundaravej as prime minister Monday,
Thailand has completed a transition from military rule back to democracy. But
analysts predict that the bumpy ride is not over for Thai politics: Samak's
tenure is likely to
PM and Minister of Defense
|||Today 12:31 PM|Siamentinel
Mr. Samak wants both jobs. His reasoning seems faulty but the new law that takes
the power out of civilian authorities seems faulty as well.
Thai PM Samak?s eloquent speech: ?Yes We Can?
|||Today 12:07 AM|Colonel Jeru
(Here is my exclusive on Samak Sundravej?s inaugural speech titled: ?YES WE
CAN?)
I want to congratulate my boss Thaksin (and myself too of course!) on our recent
hard-fought election victory.
A few months ago, no one imagined that a 72-year old political has-been with a
pending 2-year sentence for criminal defamation (under appeal) and also facing
more serious criminal corruption charges for a multi-million Baht fire truck
purchase scandal could be employed as a proxy, then party leader then Thai Prime
Minister. But in Thailand where everything is possible with money, ?YES WE CAN?!
And I thank too my coalition partners sharing our common vision of ?YES WE CAN!?
But the reason our campaign had always been different was not about what we can
do for this country, nor was it about what we can do for the people, nor about
change. The reason for our campaign was all about firstly what we can do for our
one and only patron: Thaksin Shinawatra, and secondly what we can generously do
for ourselves. Because ?YES WE CAN!?
We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what
obstacles stand in our way, nothing can withstand the power of millions of votes
all paid-for singing praises for Thaksin Shinawatra, because ?YES WE CAN!?.
We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow
louder and more dissonant in weeks and months to come. (Oh yeah?) We?ve been
asked to pause for a reality check. (Reality is the check . . the bank check).
But in the unlikely story that is Thailand, there has never been anything false
about the working our asses off for the personally rewarding Thaksin pardon. For
when we have faced down impossible odds; when we?ve been told that we?re not
ready, or that we shouldn?t try, or that we can?t, millions have responded with
a simple creed that sums up the spirit of those dependable Northeastern Esan
people. ?YES WE CAN?
It was a creed that accompanied the 500 Baht note handed out to every Esan voter
and shaped (for better or worse) the destiny of our Kingdom. ?YES WE CAN?
It was whispered by village kamnans and election canvassers that provoked the
dogs to howl their disgust through the darkest of nights. ?YES WE CAN?
It was sung by police death squads and corrupt drunk cops at dirty bars and
urine flooded back alleys. ?YES WE CAN?
YES WE CAN SAMAK! YES WE CAN THAKSIN! YES WE CAN CHALERM! YES WE CAN NEWIN!
Yes we can, yes we can, yes we can.
?????????????
Background of Samak?s semi-Obama speech: Samak had lots of free time on his
hands during the week long Cabinet selection process. Thanks to the man in
Hongkong who insisted Samak take a well-deserved rest after his election
victory. The man in Hongkong insisted ?to take care of business?(meaning the
Cabinet selection) while Samak cook elsewhere. But Samak had other plans and
worked on his speech above fired up by US democrat party presidential primary
candidate Barack (rhymes with Samak doesn?t it?) Obama?s speech at New
Hampshire.

Thailand is now apparently ?Partly Free?
|||Yesterday 12:25 PM|Nicholas Farrelly
Last year I highlighted ?media freedom? in Southeast Asia using the detailed
comparative information provided by Freedom House. Freedom House also reports
on the general ?freedom? status of countries and divides them into three
categories: Free, Partly Free and Not Free. According to this year?s Freedom
House report:
The major positive development in the region was the improvement of Thailand
from Not Free to Partly Free, due largely to the loosening of military rule and
the holding of parliamentary elections that, despite efforts by the military to
skew the results, were widely judged to be free and competitive. But the
elections? outcome?a triumph for a party aligned with Thaksin Shinawatra, the
prime minister until his ouster by a 2006 military coup?suggests possible future
problems for Thailand?s democracy. The country?s Freedom in the World rating had
deteriorated during Thaksin?s term as prime minister, and his leadership style
included disturbing elements of populism and authoritarianism. Furthermore, the
country?s high level of political polarization remains a serious obstacle to
democratic consolidation.
What do New Mandala readers think? Has Thailand jumped from ?Not Free? to
?Partly Free? in the past year? Or are these pointless comparisions?
For an interesting, visual summary a global map of ?freedom? is available here.
