On a very recent tour in Thailand, we heard a haunting flute or
recorder type of soft music at an outdoor restaurant that we liked
very much. Heard it again at the Chiang Rai night market on one of
the stages as played for a Thai mime's act. That is the best
description I can give, could not find the name of the piece while
there, was very haunting, someone indicated it might be a Bali type
music. I've searched Amazon where I copuld listen to snippets, but no
luck. Anyone maybe know of what I am trying to describe? I'd love to
get a CD of it.

Hi -
When I was in Bali a few years ago, I heard a set of music such as you describe all over the place - in restaurants, taxis, hotels, etc. I finally asked what it was, and bought the album. It turned out to be Sundanese music from, I think, Java.
Anyway, it was gamelan music, and it was called Degung - Sabilulungan, and the performer was, if I read it correctly, Ujang Surana.
A different version that I just found on the web has samples, so you can check if its in the right direction - http://www.emusic.com/album/10595/10595936.html

Amazon sells this version, though they have no samples: http://www.amazon.com/Degung-Sabilulungan-Sudanese-Music-West/dp/B000003ZO5

If it is the right music, you might also be interested in a more contemporary version of the melodies recorded by a Japanese group called Jalan Jalan on their album 'Bali'.

Jalan Jalan suggests their music gets one going ;~)

Even if itt is not the right music, consider 'Bali' anyway, because it is well worth having.
Cheers,
Ian

You might enjoy these from the site I linked Romeo to for Lanna tracks:

Thanks Maxwell. Its hard to find much of this music to preview, and I hate to buy blind.

Ian
