I (along with a whole bunch of other people, of course) monitored this
live all afternoon yesterday. Portable TVs all over the office. The
result was as most expected: the court ordered that the party that the
junta threw out be disbanded and the party that created the chaos that
helped bring the junta to power was not.
No one, not even the Thaksin opponents that I know, think this is an
example of "rule of law". This was the just the next step in the
junta's plan to secure power and make sure Thaksin can't interfere.
Note that the riots that the junta predicted didn't happen. In fact,
according to other articles, no one other than the junta thought they
would happen. There are those who believe that the whole "riot" plot
was fabricated in order to allow them an excuse to put police all over
the city, and especially around the court, to intimidate rather than
protect.
Oh well. Until the junta allows democracy to come back to Thailand
we'll just have to expect more of this.
