Can you install Windows XP? I don't know computer and just bought a
cheap laptop for $603 from Bestbuy. It said it has Vista home basic on 512
ram. It is not moving at all.

With 512 MB RAM - you need a bit more to run Vista happily.
The Microsoft website gives :

Windows Vista Home Premium
Recommended system requirements
a.. 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

Too slow for Vista--really.

b.. 1 GB of system memory

at very minimum.

c.. 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

fair enough.

It took me about 6 months to get XP running smoothly when I moved to it
from Me, so I'll hold off on 'upgrading' for a while.

Installing XP shouldn't be too difficult, but you might want to consider
doing a 'dual boot' install, so you can choose whether to work with XP or
Vista (once you up the memory) - but surely you should be able to find
someone in your company who can do that for you?

What might be material to Gina's situation is that her laptop *may* have 2
256mb sticks filling both slots--which would then need 2 512mb purchased to
go to 1 gb. (or 1 1gb stick--and those often more than twice the cost of 2
512mb)
If so, whoops, it's no longer a cheap laptop.

Frankly, having seen 2gb 2.8ghz dual core boxen drag with Vista installs, by
comparison with their previous XP (and the more so when compared with a nice
lean W2K install--yeah, I kill some services in both XP and W2K), I'd be
very hesitant to suggest a dual boot setup if Vista is one of them.
Just MHO, she'd be fine with solely XP sp2, and while 512mb is a bit on the
low side, it's workable if she's not running RAM-intensive (such as
graphics) apps.
