Re: Advice moving to Thailand with computers

Hey Martyn,

If you have problems with moving your computers - why dont you just image
the hard drives and move those disks across in your luggage. There are many
stores that can sell you a computer - pantip plaza has a range of PCs in
shops.

It is possible to get short term 1,3 and 12 month visas to stay in thailand,
but it is illegal (i think) to carry on a business there without a work
permit. I dont know if you would have much luck getting a work permit to
carry on a home based business - but then again if the income is from
overseas - it may not be too difficult to leave the main component of your
business overseas and use income from that business to live on. Without
trying to judge your intentions, I dont think that it is a good idea to
marry a thai national - just to try to get a visa. Permanent residency is
difficult - citizenship is almost impossible (there was a thread here a
little while back about that).

Cheers

Doug

I'm hoping there might be someone who's had a similar experience and can
help. I'm considering moving to Thailand but I'm aware that there are
difficulties. I need to obtain a visa, which I believe is possible after
marriage to a Thai national. I am forty years old, so I can't apply for a
retirement visa.

I also need my computers with me, in order to continue my work and all my
business documents and books. Is this likely to present any problems?
I've looked at a shipper's web site and they say that you can only import
one of each household item.

I realise there are lots of questions and you can't help with all of them,
but I'm just looking to see if anyone's had similar experiences.

Thanks
