K' Bill krup,
For what it is worth, I'd be more concerned that the gift will be
"lost" by the Thai postal services than the duty cost, but that's just
me. When my granddad was alive and before he had and had opened a Thai
bank account, I used to send cash, a C note folded once, ironed flat
sealed on back of photos between the photo and a *** of paper glued
at the edges and ironed again. Eight out of ten I'd say made it thru.
One time they even had the audacity to deliver the content in a
re-sealed envelope sans the C note. Maybe things have changed since.

I send the item Global Express, with insurance, and with delivery
confirmation, with signature required for delivery. If the item 'gets
lost' I assume I can file a claim.
Sounds like you are set to go Bill.
Good luck with your new family.
