Not all of us can stretch to a good diamond ring, but it doesn't mark us out
as unloving - to some, the knowledge of the limits of the finances might be
an important feature as it shows a realistic attitude that'll prevent big
debts later . . .

(I was lucky - I was just able to cover all the 'bits - even though I shall
be paying for it for another year to come . . . )
