deity' to be feared--or at least to be obeyed.
The tolerance (or outright encouragement given) for beating children (and
even wives!) of members of 'god fearing' sects, in order that they may
'properly' submit to authority seems consistent with such a proposed
motivation.
That's not to say bullies and outright enemies shouldn't be beaten, but many
a day that I go out among many people, I see instances of bullying within
families, and I don't mean particularly between siblings, but of child by
parent, or wife by husband, though in public it often takes the form of
rudely dismissive body language and sharply spoken authoritative voices,
where no apparent immediate emergency exists (other than perhaps a threat to
the boss's unquestioned rulership).
As in the small, so in the large. As in the large, so in the small.
