And one reason some people will never understand Thailand or the Thai
people is that they keep all of their relationships on a superficial
level. Typical behavior from those who feel superior to other races.

Bull. It is no more common in Thailand than in China or Singapore or
the US or Australia or anywhere else. Drunks are drunks.

I've been in about 40 different countries, many (like Thailand)
completely different from the US. I have found that if you take just a
few minutes to show people a bit of respect and to treat them as equals
(as you describe above) then you are accepted and respected in return.
People are people where ever you go. If you treat them decently they
will usually return the treatment. If (like some others that claim to
be experts) you treat them as second class humans they will often feel
the need to show you the error of yours ways.

Some people just don't seem to get that.

I think one problem might be with the English language and the was some
people pronounce words. They think that expat means expert and treat
the locals accordingly. They invariably lose in the end. And, of
course, they blame the locals.
