And thanks for that copper statue that turned green. :-)
==================================
Well, our pleasure. Our pride also. Once upon a time, we had in France
politicians, more clever than Chirac, who sent you La Fayette and later the
Statue of Liberty. Well, IMHO, your politicians of those time were also more
clever than your current ones. No offense.

For the record, the Statue, created by the sculptor Frédéric Auguste
Bartholdi with the technical help of Engineer Gustave Eiffel (The one who
teached US Engineers how to make steel bridges and steel-based skyscrapers),
is made of 31 tons of copper and 125 tons of steel. The external copper
plates are 2,37 mm thick (I wonder sometimes how so precise that measurment
could be in those times?) All metric units, for sure, you retrograde user
of foot, inch and other body parts :-)

The original statue will be officially handed over to the USA in Paris on
July 4, 1884 (Special date, isn't it?). Then it will be dismantled in 350
pieces, loaded onboard the French frigate "Isère" and sent to New York. The
monument was inaugurated by President Groover Cleveland on 28 october 1886,
and will be classified as "Historical Monument" on 15 october 1924.

The total construction cost is evaluated at 800.000 dollars 1884.
Fully paid back to France with GI's blood in 1918 and 1944.

I am a loony lefty but have a bit of memory.
Regards
Daniel
