Thanks for the info and thanks, Sandy, for the article.
I assumed there were plenty of thugs but didn't realize how many hired
killers.
It's scary that they are being hired so cheaply and used for monetary gain
more than in retaliation for some disrepect (maybe associated with a
monetary loss).

Is that right? Or is something wrong with my philosophy?
Greed is worse than revenge?
Greed is worse than fear of losing money?
Fear of losing money is worse than revenge?
Paper / rock / scissors ?

In a practical sense I wonder what the threshold is in money to be gained or
lost for a business person to hire a killer?
Well, that and other questions about the future were raised by that article.
The less likely that they will by fingered and the cheaper the killers come
the worse the problem gets.
How long until poor street vendors are being killed for their carts?
How long until beggars are being killed for their spot in the street?

A Thai woman I know has wanted to start a business for some time, but has a
low-paying but secure job that includes free room.
She is not a risk-taker so hasn't made real plans. She can raise enough
money to start a business, but the uncertainty of being able to make the
rent even in the short-term is a problem. She doesn't want to take what she
sees might be her one shot at it and fail ... just like so many of us. She
sells cosmetics on the side and lately works for her friend at an outdoor
restaraunt, but she has gotten some interest in real-estate knowing some
people buying and selling property on a small scale. She referred some
people lately and I thought that was a great thing to get into.

Where I live buying you can make a fair profit buying / fixing and
reselling if you can do some work yourself and/or know some contractors. My
brother and I are operating a limited and specialized remodeling franchise
and are planning to buy a house soon to live in , fix and resell, so we'll
see how it goes. Not really a fast buck, but not too risky.
I was chatting with my Thai friend just a few nights ago about all this and
so I was thinking it would be a great thing if she a hand into real estate
from her acquaintances. After reading that article I wonder...

The other night she was threatened by a drunk guy because she yelled at him
for breaking bottles in the garden area of the apartments she manages. He
made vague threats about how he grew up that neighborhood - she didn't know
who he was, etc.
He really was falling-down drunk (2 or 3 times in the grassy area, at
least). He is a friend of a tenant who spends his income buying alcohol for
his friends to get drunk instead of his family's needs.
My friend has some sympathy for the guy, but she would like to see him find
another place to live (and invite his friends) but her boss likes the guy or
just wants to keep the apartment rented...

My friend has a hard time holding her toungue and seems to have made an
enemy or two out of unruly neighbors.
She has good morals, and it seems to transfer to business ethics. I remember
she told me about her cosmetics supplier trying to undercut her and steal
her clients in her apartment complex. She was upset because this other woman
was pretty friendly with her then tried to shaft her. Apparently her
customers didn't like her supplier - she is very friendly and pleasant but
they either saw through her or knew what she was up to. My friend knew what
was up for a while , but what could she do? She didn't know any killers ...

Maybe the business world is not for her :(
Thanks again, Sandy.
I guess she wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes... but I sent her a link
to that article (more for the coincidence)
I found the original but I haven't a clue how to find it in Thai.
She's pretty good with English. If it peaks her interst she can search ;)
Actually ... I guess there wouldn't be one -it's originally in English.
