That's what I did in 1996-7. Worked fine. I took the second class
sleeper train to Butterworth, then went to the consulate on
Penang. Only 1,000 baht each way, overnight. Sometimes the air
con was *way* too cold, but other times it was OK. Stayed at a
cheap flea bag (literally) hotel and the room clerk took care of
the visa for RM 70, approx 700 baht, for a double entry tourist
visa.
One drawback, the price of an extension is now 1,900 baht. The
visa may also be more expensive.
