Unfortunately the taxi fare hike will have the effect suffocating certain sectors of the economy. Transportation expenditure is one of the biggest item in any household spending and 60% of population whom do not drive and have no choice but to accept the taxi fare hike, they will just spend less on other discretionary spending such as retail, food and beverage, restaurants and catering, education, tourism, etc, etc.
In addition, many businesses in Singapore also pay taxi fare for their workers as part of their business expenditure and the taxi fare hike will have the effect of crimping their business spending or pass these cost to their workers or consumers.
in the end, the taxi fare hike will benefit nobody and that includes taxi operators and taxi drivers themselves.
