I wonder how many Singaporeans are really concerned about
the possibility that their wealth being managed by GIC and Temasek
could be wiped out in a matter of years let alone decades.
You see in the last 12 months alone on the back of the financial
crisis, the investments in GIC and Temasek books have drastically
decline by 20 - 50 %. At this rate, it will not be long before the
funds are completely wiped out. These are historic times. The
financial meltdown has spread from the West to Asia and the world.
It has spread from the banks to the whole economy. It is global.
It touches every aspects of the world from financial to economic,
from political to social, from religion to culture. There is a real
danger that this crisis might last up to 10 years like what the
Japanese went thru in their lost decade in the 90's. If this happened
with world prices of everything spiralling downward in a long
deflation, then Singaporeans can say goodbye to the funds which
are managed by GIC and Temasek. I hope this will not happen.
I hope the world economy will start to recover before the year is
out. However, the risk is there and Singaporeans should be
made aware of it. All this talks by LKY that they are prepared
for all eventualities are bullshit. Just like his proclaimation last
year that Singapore is in a GOLDEN ERA.
