He has outlived his usefulness and beyond his natural
capacity. That is why he needs artificial support.

He has a pace-maker implant..to regulate his heart pump...and if the
heart stop, the pacemaker kicks in... to restart it.

There is no reason to have an implant if his heart is performing
normally. His heart is failing....the only reason for the implant...
If his heart was strong and robust..he doesn't need the pacemaker.

For most old and weak senior citizens...when the heart fail to perform
as it should...it is a sure sign ..that the time is up.
