Use the English language to give Singapore a competitive edge and retain a SingaporeIdentity?
This subject is now being rekindled again, on TV and in print.
The competitive edge of Singapore is not its working language. It is its people, specifically its Chinese majority. There is another island nation Mauritius. It has a bigger land mass than Singapore and English is also the working language, but its population is majority Indians. It is hardly known in the world. English is also the working language of the Philippines; so too in India. India like to boast that it has a population well-versed in English. It promotes this around the world as its competitive edge over its rival China. While it keeps harping on this, China keeps racing ahead. The Japanese doesn't give a hoot about English yet it is the most advanced nation in Asia. In the EU, the nation with the most competitive edge is not Britain, but Germany, where the German language is supreme. Britain itself, the home of the English language, has on average, been in continual economic decline since WW2. There is not enough evidence to prove empirically that Singapore would not be what it is today were it not for the English language. Wherever and whenever the people who make up a nation have the right kind of values and spirit, then it advances. These are better bases for meritocracy then language skill. A language does not a nation maketh; it's the people.
Under all these rubbish about the English language and the SingaporeIdentityhides venomous racism. The minorities, especially the Indians, refuse to accept the existence of a Chinese majority in Singapore. They are trying to destroy the reality of Singapore being a multi-racial country with a substantial Chinese majority. And they are going all out in their most snaky Indian ways to make it happen. From National Day posters, it has moved on to TV. There is this promotional short ad about 'one people' Singapore. In such a Singapore, there are all kinds of people in equal numbers, there is no majority, no minorities. This is ethnic cleansing of the Chinese, albeit symbolically. If the Chinese remain dumb about what is going on, they will be cleansed, thoroughly.
Will English unite us into 'one people', regardless of race, language or religion, as those snaky racists want us to believe?
Look at the TODAY newspaper. It is an English language paper which is top heavy with Indians and half-Indians. As a result, the Indian bias is shining. It is blatantly pro-India and pro-Indian.
Look back at how it supported SR Nathan when he alone decided to run for another term of Presidency. Look back at how it tried to establish Tharnam as the candidate for the next PM. Take note of how it writes about Chinese chieftains and Indian chieftains. Any Indian chieftain it writes about would give the readers the impression that he/she is "the greatest human ever born", just like how the Indians in Malaysia described one of its own kind.
When it comes to portrait an Ugly Singaporean, only a Chinese will do, by hook or by crook. There is this half-breed Babu Singh. Instead of using him to portrait a Singh with a stinky turban, he is used to play the role of a crass Chinese by the name of Phua Chu Kang in a TV program. Efforts are being made to promote this program around the world. This is snaky racism. A stinky Indian is becoming more and more a part of the Singapore scene now, with more Indians coming in. When will there be a TV program about such a character? How about one on a Malay who cannot do without his stinky belachan, but can do without toilet paper? The authorities should be more alert to the mass media being used to practice snaky racism.
One of the reasons for the drop in the birth rate of the Chinese in Singapore is that they see Singapore as becoming less and less Chinese. It is the blood, sweat and toils of their forefathers that this nation was build on. Yet, it is now being handed over to non-Chinese from all over the world. The government has to make up its mind. If it wants its Chinese to breed and multiply, it has to remove all the factors which make them feel insecure, inferior or even enslaved. Otherwise, it will have the Chinese refusing to breed or those adapting to become Anglicised and then move on to their newfound motherlands like Australia, New Zealand, Britain or America.First thing to do, put a stop to all those racists efforts to deny the existence of a Chinese majority in Singapore!

The US is the saving grace for the English language. Without it, the
value of the language would be greatly diminished. Since the world's
largest economy is still English based, it is pragmatic to use the
language as the working language. But in Singapore, the role of the
English language is more than that. It is the de facto national
language. It is the language of politics. It is now becoming a
political tool to change the racialidentityof Singapore. Those
racist minorities like the Indians are trying to push it to be the
cultural language. They want all Singaporean to speak English only,
at work, at play and even at home.
Indians are the most useless race in the world. There are more than a
billion of them living together as one nation. They have so many
languages and none is good enough to be accepted by a majority. They
end up having to use the language of their past colonial master to run
the country. In their typical snaky way, they say they are being
democratic. Indians do not have the values or the spirit to make their
race or their nation strong. The only thing they can do well is to
mate and breed like pests. These are the type of people we have
accepted as new immigrants. They are accepted on the basis of their
proficiency in English language. Now these useless pests are telling
us that we should all speak English, even at home. Next, they will
want to influence us to speak English in their funny accent, which is
a joke all over the world.
Ravi Veloo has written a shitty piece in defence of the English
language. Ravi Veloo is a typical snaky Indian racist who refuses to
accept the presence of a Chinese majority in Singapore. Remember his
snaky act of going around hotels to experience the service he obtained
and then wrote a piece about racial discrimination he experienced as
an Indian? That was when he was with the Straits Times. When he was
with TODAY, he was openly exuberant over the appointment of some
Indians to high offices and cried out for more such "Indian chiefs",
exposing his own racist nature. He had been absent for sometimes from
the media scene. He is back again in TODAY. In fact, after they failed
to promote Tharman as the candidate for the next PM, the Indians in
TODAY have grown in size, giving Indian like Ravi Veloo a chance to
write again. They are preparing to the next round of fight.
That director of Singapore Polytechnic's School of Business, V.
Maheantharan, ought to be sacked. It is not his job make a survey
about the standard of spoken English here. He should instead be
concerned about imparting knowledge to his students in order that they
will become successful businessmen. Now, don't tell us that speaking
good English will guarantee or improve the chances of a successful
business. He would have performed his duty better had he told his
student to watch the TV program "Money Mind China". Being a typical
Indian, it would not be surprising that he would order his students to
watch "Money Mind India" instead.
What Ravi Veloo and that SP lecturer want, they should fly off to
countries like US, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Instead of
being concerned with good or bad English, he should be concerned with
being good or bad Singaporean.
The non-Chinese, especially Indians, should be made to speak the
Chinese language, perfectly, at work, at play or at home. The pathetic
truth is that in Singapore, the Chinese language has a very low
status. It is not even allowed to be spoken in public. Remember the
case in the Borders Bookstore? An Indian who objected to Chinese
speaking in their own language among themselves in his presence has
been in his second term as the President of Singapore. To have such a
person present in any Chinese cultural event is an adulteration of
Chinese culture. Such was the case of the recent Mooncake Festival in
Chinatown.
If having the chance to speak in Chinese is difficult, then having the
chance to read it is worse. Locally produced Chinese TV programs do
not carry Chinese subtitles but foreign ones do. So, the Chinese in
Singapore has to depend on foreign TV program in order to have a
chance to read Chinese characters. Isn't this pathetic?
Or at least speak English like the Chinese. If you watch the CNA
program Bridge between Giants, you see Chinese in India speaking
English with the funny Indian accent! Instead of laughing at "Why you
so like dat?", Ravi Veloo should consider it as the proper way to
speak English to the Chinese.
Chinese subtitle of TV programs is not only pathetic but idiotic. Take
the case of those HK movies. They are originally in Cantonese which is
mainly colloquial. After being dubbed in Mandarin, the Chinese
subtitles are nothing but an adulteration of proper Mandarin.
What is the reason for not having subtitles for local TV production?
It did not start off like this.
