In Ayurveda , just as in Chinese medicine, there is a saying "let your
food be your medicine." The recommendation is in that spirit but as
in all things that can have an effect on our body there are certain
precautions that we often have to take and also to understand that the
long term consumption of something, even as innocuous as food, can
lead to undesirable effects.

For eg. fenugreek had been used to help women lactate after childbirth
in india and the consumption even over a month will enlarge the
breast. The enlargement is not fat but real breast tissues and it is
permanent.

One also has to be careful with the use of oil. Some cannot be used
for stir-frying.

From the experiences of homoeopathic proving and experiences in
chinese medicine any long term consumption of herbs or food should be
broken up periodically. Most herbal drugs have short 1/2 life and 5
day consumption with 2 day break would be sufficient. Having said this
the following recommendation from the chinese tradition may be of
use.

a. consumption of brown rice instead of white/polished rice. Rich in
chromium. If cannot take one should use supplement. Chromiun aids in
the sugar metabolism. Many diabetics have insulin but the cells could
not metabolise sugar.

b. Bitter gourd - at least one a day.

c. Capsicum - had been shown in mice to activate the production of
insulin. Even pancreatic cells that had long stopped producing
insulin.

Most diabetics also have poor circulation. Drinking of craetagus (red-
dates) concoction daily - like drinking tea is useful. Consider 5 day /
2 day break regiment. Craetagus is also great for the heart. Usually
takes about a month to see result.

For insulin dependent diabetics blood sugar can often be adequately
controlled using cinnamon. 1/2 teaspoon twice a day with meals. A
daily use of arnica 30C in wet-dose had also been shown to help. If
this fails to work you can always revert to western medicine.

Non-healing of wounds in diabetics can be helped by the use of arnica
30C (for oral consumption) and arnica 6x applied to the wound.
