Depending on foreign workers
Our economy should move away from being dependent on low cost foreign
labors because this has brought on many social problems for us. It is
only going to get worse as their number increases. Highly skilled and
talented foreign professionals should be welcomed. Make sure they are
recruited based on merits. Having said that, merits in Singapore could
well mean a good command of the English language only. Is that true
merit?
Is there a proper policy on foreign workers recruitment? It seems to
be favoring workers from South Asia, in particular, India. Let's hope
it is not based on a racist policy of increasing the proportion of
Indian in the population.
Today TODAY has an article written by a Chinese who described his
experience about the "discriminative and racist" behaviour of a bus
driver and a woman passenger towards Indian workers. Very typical of
the Indian-run TODAY. To say the Indians stink is not racist, it is a
cultural truth. This happens even in India where the northerners
express similar opinion about the southerners.
The media would do a better job if they would remind foreign workers
here how to carry themselves. I have seen a sweaty Indian worker
jumped into a swimming pool he was cleaning without showering himself
first. I have seen Indians urinating in the backlanes of Serangoon
Rooad. I have seen them leaving rubbish around after congregating at
their favorite places. The media should also make an investigative
report about the crimes that had been committed by foreign workers,
both solved and unsolved. This would do everyone a favor,
Singaporeans or foreigners.
