The question is: What did you do after you discovered the filthy practice of
the doctor? Did you report him to the Medical Board? If nobody reports him
to the Board, then how do you expect the Board to take action. So if you
did not take any positive action but choose to be a whiner, then carry on
whining.

I suffered from an infection in my left ear and went to see a
neighbourhood doctor. He pushed his ear-examination-scope into my
left ear and confirmed that the infection has caused some discharge
and redness. Then, most unfortunately, he wanted to put the same
scope into my right ear to see if it is also infected. I quickly
stopped him from doing so as he did not bother to clean or sterilise
his scope. Only upon my repeated insistence did he finally agree to
wipe the scope before pushing it into my right ear.
What was more shocking was that I later learnt from his nurse (on the
understanding of preserving her anonymity) that the doctor does not
clean his ear-scope even after examining different patients. How can
such an unhygienic practice be allowed by the Singapore Medical
Board? Imagine that the ear-scope had earlier been used on an AIDS
infected patient or simply anyone with a communicable disease. The
discharge from the infected ear would easily be transmitted to other
patients. I hope someone can help clarify the stand of the Singapore
medical authorities on this unacceptable practice.
