Air Force grounds F-15 jets
7:57 p.m. ET Nov. 5, 2007
Headlines news screamed Associated Press.
F-15 fighter jet probed for 'structural failure' The Air Force has
indefinitely grounded all F-15 fighter jets after a plane crashed last
week. Preliminary findings indicate a serious structural failure.
This is not the first time an F-15 has crashed this year. In May, an
F-15 crashed just outside southwestern Indiana. In June, another F-15
jet from the 142nd Fighter Wing, in Oregon. A separate incident in
June, an F-15 crashed near Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. In six
months, at least 4 F-15 had crashed...with many more not reported.
Maj. Cristin Marposon, an Air Force spokeswoman, said Monday that the
fleet of 676 F-15s, including mission-critical jets, were grounded
Nov. 3 ....for "airworthiness concerns.
F-15s are located in bases throughout the United States including
Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Japan and the Middle East. The
operations in these places will be adversely affected.
The US Air force planned to replace the F-15 with the stealth jet
F-22. But due to the high cost, and a design flaw (crashed in 2004)
the plan was amended.
The Air force will take delivery of only 200 units of F-22 (NOT 680 to
replace the F-15) by 2011 at a hefty cost of US$5 billions.
The US Air Force is in serious trouble. ...aging F-15 (33 years old)
and too few F-22.
What a bloody MESS.
