Read the service conditions in small prints on the contract form that you signed. Maybe there is a
loop hole to charge Singtel that they did not offer the service promised. You could bring the case
to IDA (Infocomm Development Authority?).
From what you have said, that the telephone could not operate all the time, it means that Singtelcould have lapsed in service standards stipulated by IDA. The normal telephone voice signal is
between 300 and 3000 hertz. At the telephone exchange the normal telephone voice signals are
converted to 64Kbits per second of digital data and transmitted via the high bandwidth telephone
national network to the destination telephone exchange. At the destination exchange or node the
digital data is converted back into analogous human like voice. Technically the reconverted voice
signal is jittery but the human ears cannot detect the jittery and so the voice sounds normal.
In compression technology supporting networks the voice signal could be compressed to even as low as
8Kbits or 16 Kbits second. Now you could still hear the voice but without much pitch variations.
When using VOIP it depends on the availability of bandwidth and how much bandwidth is allocated to
voice and data separately. When you are using both the telephone and internet simultaneously , to
which signal does the network gives priority to? Technically Voice signals should always get
priority over other data signals. Because when there is a break or delay the human users will
detect the disruption in voice and will get irritated at the bad service. So voice signals will and
should get priority over other data signals like internet data signals.
In the industry, voice and other data signals can be tagged with priority. So voice signals are
tagged with higher priority IDs. The network nodes transporting these signals would read and
recognise higher priority signals and process them first. This tagging is called QOS (Quality Of
Service) in the industry.
So when your voice via the VOIP telephone does not get proper transmission then one reason would be
the QOS for your voice signals are not configured correctly and prioritised. If that is what had
happened then that would be a violation of service standards, because Singtel would have charged you
for the service that it did not provide.
And if they did not provide the service then they would have violated the contract. Which you could
use as leverage to bargain to roll back to the old service.

it is a 2 years contract so cancellation will cost penalty.
Cost-wise it is cheaper for me (not taking into account the 24hours power
supply to the MIO modem): my previous 1.5M broadband plan was $58 + $8 land
line = $66. Now it is 3M broadband + VOIP + mobilephone 100 mins free = $68
By the way, it took them almost more than a month to install MIO.

Large corporations in Singapore are already using voice over IP
internally. I have seen Cisco VOIP
telephones connected to the LAN. The same LAN could be connected to the
PC. But each telephone has
an individual power adapter and they run 24hrs. That is not very
efficient. But the conversations
can be easily recorded and monitored. This technology is great to operate
an internal exchange.
When singtel issued you this then their telephone exchange no longer have
to use telephone cards
that supply three different voltage at three different states. Normally
when a normal telephone's
cradle is down the in flowing supply would be about a negative five volts
or so. But when the
cradle is up the voltage is at the positive end, I cannot remember the
voltage. But your telephone
is ringing then the incoming voltage is about 120 AC. Now by using VOIP
they have eliminated the
use of high voltage cards. Low voltage cards last longer. Now the
customer bares the part of the
cost to run the network. Good luck.
Have they not offered you a chance to roll back to older service?

I did not realised that the land line will be cut off after the MIO.
I also realised that I have to keep the modem running for 24 hours
consuming electricity if I want to keep the phone working. This is
additional electricity cost.
My phone has problem last night - cannot receive call and cannot call
out.
I have to use the mobile phone to call the MIO Support 1800 555 6000.
The
line connected easily but only after one minute of going through
various
selection, I reached the MIO Technical Help Desk, then it is the "all
our
technical support staff are busy" and listen to the music for 5
minutes. I
called again and hold for 10 minutes of my air time on my mobile. Still
no
luck. So much for the technical support.
Think twice before you switch.

Don't fall for this crap. When they install the 2wire router, they
basically cut off your landline. Your telelephone line is routed back
to the DSL line to use VOIP. So what happens if your DSL line or
router is down - you can't access the internet using your dial up
modem, neither can you call them for help since your landline is
severed. The only way to attempt to reach them helpline is to use your
mobile, but then you'll face the endless "yall our technical support
lines are busy" computer generated response. Plus the 2wire router is
supposed to be extra powerful, in reality the wireless G is even worse
than the B router I was using before the ill fated switch to MIO.
