Your opinion is noted.
Different societies are run differently. Each society needs to find
what works for itself. Given the size and resources that Singapore
started with, it had done amazingly well for a small country. Let's not
discount that. As for greater care for the old and poor, yes, more need
to be done. The policies are moving in the right direction. It may not
be to the extent that equal to other welfare models, which also have
their pros and cons. It will take time, but it will get better. There
will be more senior citizens in the future, so it will become a natural
issue.
what? My mom was not born in Australia and Australian government is
giving her $5,200 per year for the last 25 years now = AUG$270,400.
Singapore? Old people who worked like *** here and are getting what so
far from the SOB? few lot of singtel shares, few hundres dollars of
rebate here and there. They have paid themselves handsomely and are
giving peanuts to the poor.

Agree with AleXX, it is very ironic.
Remember the Samsui women, they rather work to support themselves than
to receive handouts. In fact, if the society is in the habit of
receiving handouts all the time, then we really have a problem.
The other point is that the "hard" work keeps the old folks fit. It is
very ironic as I have mentioned at the start. Someone related that he
stopped his mother from doing the marketing because she is old and they
felt pity that she had to do the "hard" work. Although the aged mother
refused, they stopped her anyway. The result, the mother's health
deteriorated very quickly, as she does not have any more exercise and
motivation to live.
you were wrong like Alexx. Most old people would like to retire
"comfortably". They don't like to retire doing nothing. Most westerners
have one advantage over the asians is that they can go to libraries and
borrow books to read. They can go to bars and enjoy drinking with
fellow old people there. Over here, old people are unfortunately can
drink or read. For our generations when we grow old, we can use
internet to talk *** with fellow singaporeans, go to libraries to
borrow books etc etc. My mother is enjoying her retirement in Perth
getting her pension from the government $100 per week, living in her 2
room semi detached house with huge garden, cooking her favourite food
for her sons, daughters and grand children not every day but at least
once a week. Why can't there be some sort of programme for elderly here
too to retire confortably instead of getting pathetic handouts like the
workfare bouns which is a joke.

Yeah, you SOB, first you don't pay home makers, retirees and sick
people who can't work. Now you are going to say, see the workfare bonus
will benefit the poor old ladies and ah peks scavenging the rubbish
bins for scrap aluminium tins or newspaper/card bord. Yeah they make
$50 per month scavenging and what they get? 1.5x$50=$75 workfare bonus.
Tell me you SOB, what can $75 do to alleviate their welfare here in
Singapore?
Many of these "scavengers" do so, not because they need the money
to survive.....they do it to keep themselves busy and active.
It is quite common for us to feel pity when we see these old
folks pushing tons of discarded cartons, or plastic bags filled
with empty aluminium cans to be resold for recycling.
In most cases, they have homes to go back to, and food to feed
themselves....so, even if you give them $10,000 tomorrow, they
will be back on the streets the next day doing the same things.
This is a group of peoples, who are the first generation of
Chinese immigrants, who have been physically and mentally active
all their lives, and they feel happy when they can still make
$10 a day.........to them to do nothing all day is like putting
them inside a prison staring at the walls.
