I remember just a few years ago headlines in US newspapers to the
effect of "Britain finally pays off the last of its war debt to

US". I was one of those who didn't know that the Brits owed the US
money WRT WWII.

No, that's all you had because you were broke. The bases were
necessary for the common defense and as a base to launch offensives.
It's not like you were going to win on your own.

It is noted that the bases are still in USA hands and, furthermore, we were
hardly alone. We had the entire British Empire and as we would have
liberated other occupied European nations these would have added to the
allied forces.


Stop kidding yourself. Why on earth would the US altruisticaly help the
UK - it's main trade rivals.-

I'm pretty sure no nation ever altruistically helps another.
There's always some perceived benefit. People may be altruistic, but
never governments.

That's news to me just what are you paying us for our help in Iraq and
