I read somewhere a while ago that the sustainable population of the UK is
about 20 million; roughly one third of what it is now. By sustainable,
they meant permanently self-sufficient in all resources. Perhaps it was
AWS?

And only organically grown foodstuffs?

It wasn't, but the UK could easily be self-sufficient in food if it wasn't
for our appallingly inefficient land use.
The energy and water budget for producing way more meat than we need is a
case in point.
Ironicaly the healthiest diet Britons ever had was during WW2. Didn't see
many morbidly obese people waddling around back then.
And for your information organic systems are WAY more productive than the
old chemical systems. My market garden produced about 30 times more produce
per acre than the 'farm' next door.
But guess who got all the government subsidies
