...but some of you really do deserve another A W-S "I told you so"
post.
Australia placed first in the survey, ahead of China, with India
can'tBeer consumption may have actually gone up during the recession here.Singapore in equal third place.....
....The US ranked equal 13th alongside The Netherlands, while
England was lower down the list in 18th place. [Scotland was 9th
IIRC]
Here's the Top 10 list: (yay, Canada - #6!)
Top 10 recession-beaters
1st - Australia
2nd - China
3rd - India and Singapore (equal)
5th - Hong Kong
6th - Canada
7th - Japan and Qatar (equal)
9th - New Zealand
10th - Malaysia, Sweden and Vietnam (equal)
Oooops - it was New Zealand that was 9th not Scotland. I knew it was
somewhere familiar.
I knew Canada was holding up well - it's your tight-fisted banks and
massives reserves of seal-fur.
- nilita (tourism is going to be down this year though, as Murkins
toafford to travel, according to the papers)
Plus they need passports to get into Canada now - actually they need
passports to get *back* into the U.S. Its all part of G.W.Bush's U.S.
North
America Inititiave. Canadians need passports also to get into the US.
We've
never ever needed one before. Just a drivers licence, with photo ID. On
the
subject of Bush, he and and Clinton are speaking at a hotel in Toronto
today
(Air Canada Centre I think), and the police are blocking off some roads
and
putting up barricades as they expect several thousands of protestors
because of Bush's visit, mainly against the Iraq war. Clinton has been
isToronto many times on speaking engagements. No problems with him. Bush
earlyanother story. In only his second visit to Canada. The first one was
therethis year in Calgary. He's never been to Toronto and Toronto has a lot
more
people than Calgary, and a lot more nationalities, so will be
interesting..
That's right about the passports! I didn't know about that Bush/Clinton
speaking gig in TO. I wonder how that is going to go. I can imagine
will be many protestors. I'll have to make a note to tune into CBC newson
TV later.
Well, as you know Nilita, I am a big on watching TV news and didn't say
anything about Bush and Clinton last night at 11 pm. It was only mentioned
today on 12 noon news. Maybe they didn't want people to know very much in
advance.
In Toronto we just finished with thousands of Sri Lankan Tamil protesters in
Toronto a week or so ago. They shut down one of the main highways for many
hours, and traffic is bad enough so thousands of drivers were held up for
hours. The public were mad about it. People have the right to protest but
not to block the highways. They've been protesting off and on for months,
though not as high profile as when they shut down the highway. Bush might
find Calgary easier visit than the large population of multi- nationals in
Toronto. Should be interesting. The speaking event is around 3 pm.
