Re: Genius Wanted !!!

On Sun, 03 May 2009 22:55:55 +0100, Josiah Jenkins scrievit this wi a
finger in the stour:

A really weird one.

A webpage, already uploaded and rendering OK.

I modify the page on my own machine and, _before_uploading_it_, check it
in Firefox and Opera and it's OK.

Internet Exploder, for some reason, moves the button from the search box
in the header from 'the right of' to 'underneath' the text input box but
appears OK otherwise.

NOW, if, in Firefox, I reload the page, the page size goes ginormous . .
.
Both the text and the graphics !

So I re-do the page, using copy and paste of the HTML, a few lines at a
time in an attempt to spot an error . . . Zilch !

The new file <z_freeware.html> [underscore !] (which is the old data
copied into a clean template) now renders as it should, with text and
graphics remaining the same (correct) size after 'reload'.

So I copy this file to another folder and re-name it as
<z-freeware.html> (with a hyphen) ie the original troublesome file name

So I now have two files which are identical except in name.

Aaaaaargh.

The underscore file is still OK but the one with the hyphen is still
rendering incorrectly . . . BUT ONLY

1) ON MY MACHINE !
2) IF FIREFOX IS AREADY OPEN
3) IF I RELOAD THE PAGE

I then upload both files to see what happens and both are correctly
displayed.
(Except for the peculiarity of IE re the header)

Anybody got any ideas ?
I've spent over an hour trying to figure it out.

Both pages rendered exactly the same here on 3 different browsers -
Firefox 3.0.10, Opera 9.27 and Epiphany 2.22.2 (Mozilla Gecko based). All
running under Xubuntu (derivative of Ubuntu).

I suspect the problem lies with the particular browsers you are using,
especially when ran on the same machine used for editing.

I've noticed that when reloading certain pages, Internet Explorer and
Firefox behave somewhat differently. Sometimes FF needs a double-refresh
whereby the page changes appearance (apparently interpreting the CSS file
differently on the 2nd attempt), whereas IE needs Ctrl-Shift while
pressing the reload button. It's worth a try anyway, in case your PC/
laptop is storing previous versions of the page and not updating properly
(or only partially). On a couple of occasions, I've even closed and re-
opened a browser because it didn't seem to be "playing the game".
