Considering the quality of English I hear on US news broadcasts, and read
in US papers, learning decent English would be a good first step...

We don't speak English, Sheila.
We speak American.
It is distantly related to your mother tongue but it is still a separate
language.
For example, we NEVER have Bangers for breakfast.
And Spotted *** is definitely a no-no.
No bonnets on our cars and no spanners in our tool kits.
We do not dash about in our lorries and we never crap in a loo.
