I just remembered a book that my brother sent me from Scotland many
years
ago, when he was a Prof at the U. of Edinburgh.

IIRC it was a book (fiction) by an author named "Gunn" who was popular
over
there. I really couldn't get into it, so passed it on to a sib.

Would anybody know who that author would be?

Neil M Gunn ?

Yes, that is indeed him.

I recall his name from seeing one (more ?) of his book(s)
on my Dad's bookshelf when I was a child.

I can't remember the title and my Mother had a clearance
at some point (one of many, I think it was a hobby of hers)
and it's long gone, along with the copies of HV Morton's,
'In Search of Scotland' and 'In Search of Ireland'.

The book of his I am most familiar with is "The Silver Darlings." I'm pretty
sure there may be a copy in the loft. It would certainly be a good place to
start for anyone interested.

According to this it is more positive than many of his books and may well be
the best known one.
