Many years ago (shall we say around 40 ?) when I was in the TA
(Territorial Army), we did our annual camp at Weymouth one year.

We travelled by train from Paisley and I hate to estimate how much
alcohol was taken onto the train. Around 3am, for whatever reason,
the train was shunted into a siding at Crewe. The pipe band, after
about 10 hours steady drinking, had been marching up and down the
carriages (dressed mainly in kilts & socks) before this. But when we
were stopped, they opted for an open-air performance and started
marching up and down the side of the train !

I have often wondered what the good citizens of Crewe thought of
an impromptu rendering of 'The Black Bear' at that hour.
