Fresh Mackerel

I've just had my lunch - or denner as we say hereabouts- see the latest
Irn-brew advert.

I had what must be about the finest meal available, fresh, ripper caught
mackerel. Most people will know that oily fish like herring and mackerel are
good for you, but you rarely get mackerel for sale in the shops unless it is
smoked. Even when you do get it it comes from a "purse net," which is a huge
circular net hundreds of yards long. The net is pulled in and the purse is
closed until they are all squeezed into a small space and then they are
pumped into a boat.

If they are caught on a hook they fight for their lives and taste entirely
differently. Timescales are quite different as well. "Fresh" fish can be two
weeks or so since it last saw the sea, whilst ours today were less than 36
hours out of the sea.

All in all one of the best meals I have had for a long time.
