All that is true, the way the war unfolded would have been different,
but
what was being discussed was the possibility of us speaking German! In
other
words the initial poster suggested that Britain would have been invaded
and
subdued. However the Germans gave up on their invasion plans at the end
of
1940 before US intervention in the war, and before lend-lease etc. We
may
have had a prolonged war; we may have had an iron curtain at, for
example,
the Rhine; or we may even have had Germany survive by coming to some
kind of
accord. Who knows? But I can't see the logic in someone suggersting we
would
have all been speaking German without the existence of the US. On the
contrary had their been a totally British North America, even if it
wasn't
the size and force of the US, then it would almost certainly have been
involved in the war straight away. Rather than be a hindrance through
1939
and 1940 it could only have been a help.

Okay, but I don't see how Britain/Commonwealth could've mounted any
kind of invasion of France without the amount of help provided by the
historical US
But I've not been talking about a British invasion of France! In fact I
already said to Conway yesterday that without US involvement D-Day
wouldn't have happened. The original poster suggested that we would be
speaking German had it not been for the American Revolution. In other
words it was suggested that Germany would succesfully invade Britain.
But would an invasion have been necessary had Germany sealed the sea
lanes, a task the U-Boats well on its way to doing.
You guys would have withered on the vine.
(Once that pesky Navy had been dealt with)
At the risk of offending the Americans of the group who would like, some of
them, to believe that they have been the ultimate warriors and fighters of
tyranny, pretty much all the family members of age in my mother's and
father's families in Canada - and there were plenty of them - enlisted in
the military in WWII. And, that includes the women! Most came out alive,
my father was severely wounded in Europe, and an uncle died on a Normandy
beach.
I would like to think that their - Canada's - participation made a
difference.
