It's sad, really. I can remember a day when it was possible to get by
without a voluminous killfile. Those days seem to have passed with
the advent first of AOL and then of GoogleGroups.

True...I recall when the worst thing on the horizon of egre-
gious idiocy was the September influx from the .edu and
ac.uk accounts. But those were pre-www days when people
still operated (mostly) from unix shell accounts...which, in
and of themselves, tended to serve as a moron filter. Any-
one who couldn't figure out how to post with vi using trn
was effectively silenced. There are days when I'm inclined
to think that wasn't a Bad Thing.

Either way is fine.

Right then, followups reset.

Oh, 'back and forth' doesn't really bother me. What's annoying is the
various netcops who think the way to 'fix' things is to spray a bunch
of crap around in everyone else's back yard.

It is, I admit, an inelegant means of dealing with a problem...
and not one which I completely understand. Admittedly it's
marginally better than gratuitous profanity, but only just and
it seems pretty pointless from where I sit because the colla-
teral damage is enormous.

That's rather like
trying to fix a hole in a shirt by cutting it out with a pair of
scissors. It just makes the problem worse.

No question about it...and the person who, theoretically, is
the cause of it all, isn't harmed in the slightest...amazing
that intelligent people can miss a fact so obvious. When
all the dust from this settles, DSH will still be crossposting
people will still be replying without checking the headers
and threads will still be off-charter and off-topic.

The more things change...
