And that is the reason for the 'one liner'.
Well I'm glad we cleared that up. So why the professed amazement when I said the cut-off point was at almost £60k?
Were you just stirring the pot?
I'm largely a fan of tax credits. Particularly at the bottom end they have made a difference. They have also been successful in getting many people with children into some sort of economic activity. We regularly get people at interview who specify they need to work 16 hours per week. 16 hours may not seem like a lot, but I suspect prior to tax credits they would not have worked at all, so it is a good way back in to work.

I have learned on SCS, over some years, that it does not
advance any argument if you profess to have all the answers,
so a little mischief is good lubrication.
I can tell you that £60,000 is still 'quite a lot of money', and
in the Britain of today you can still do a lot with it.
On the other hand there are many who make only a tiny
proportion of that. Often cultural factors of different aspiration
contribute to that. I noted your Mother's experience, which
shows a welcome face to revenue 'business'. There is a whole
army of people employed to 'ensure' that the rights of the
elderly, deaf, disabled etc are dealt with in a practical and
non-judgemental way. The form filling initiative is just one
of a host of initiatives aimed at bringing power to lives of the
people.....all of them, regardless of Ethnic, national or any other
possible obstruction to ensure maximum take up of entitlement,
and inclusion in the wealth of the nation.
As a Young Socialist, I used to pray for such a tomorrow.
I am delighted that that 'Tomorrow' became Today.
But there is much that still needs to be done.

Get real you old bloody fool.
Who seeks out the old, the disabled and the ill in their own homes to attend to their form filling?
Here is a little example for you of how it doesn't work in practice.
I was deaf and flat on my back. I had recently lost my wife and I lived alone in a rural setting.
I needed help but where was I to get it?
Within days of my wife's death I got a letter that cut out her DLA and stopped my allowance for attending to her needs.
I had no works pension at that point and was not getting the State Retirement Pension.
How was I to get the forms needed to apply for these things?
Who was to fill them in, as I was flat on my back, if I did get the forms?
If I did manage to fill in the forms who was to take them to the post box?
Now I'll tell you how I ended up in such dire straits.
Two and a half years before these events, when I had first became disabled, I had requested a joint review of my wife and my own circumstances in view of the fact I had to give up work to care for her full time. At that point the slight help given was only in her name but now she needed full time care and I was now also disabled. I got the review but the person doing the review made some grave errors. She asked me what my reason's for review were and I said the most obvious change was that I now had Menier's Disease. Like so many other non-medical people she had no idea what this was. I explained that it was not, in fact, a disease but an injury to the inner ear. She asked how this disabled me. I explained that it had two comonents. The first being Tinnitis, (noises in the inner ear),Plus industrial deafness. She noted this and asked what the other part was and I said, "Severe Vertigo Attacks", and she made a note and continued by asking what help we needed. I said we actually needed very little as between us we managed very well but that I need to insure, if things got beyond me, I could seek urgent help. I also asked her advice on aids for bathing and assisting my wife's mobility. Not I did not ask for these to be provided, just what was the best aids to buy.
So when my wife died I had, with great difficulty, phoned and requested a, "Community Alarm", in case I fell and needed help. After several weeks they posted me a letter refusing the alarm.
So now I had hurt my back and was in dire straits and no hope of any help.
Eventually I wriggled on my belly to the phone and phoned my GP and was hospitalised.
When I got back home I had a friend phone the Social Work department to find out just what was going on. It turned out that this, "Occupational Therapist", though my trouble with Vertigo was nothing more than a fear of hights.
She had done, as Hitch*** also had, confused, "acrophobia", (a fear of heights), with, "Vertigo", (a very real loss of all ballance, accompanied with extreme spinning sensations).
She saw no valid reason why someone who feared heights should need an alarm for when they had a fear attack while the reason really was that such an attack renders the sufferer totally unable to stand up or even function in any way.
So just who, in this great Valhalla of yours, is there that looks out for those who are old, sick or disabled and who are house bound without help and who also have sensory impairment that prevents the use of a telephone?
I'll tell you NO ONE WHATSOEVER or whosoever.
This is the actual point of the goverment schemes they tell us are, "means tested, to target those in most need". In fact it is to avoid providing for those, who for whatever reason, cannot, do not or will not apply for those services.
..You know little of human nature if you do not know that the scum who inflict drugs and booze upon themselves, that the ex-prisoners, the sex-offerners and child molesters will be head of the queue, armed with lies, to ask for these allowances while the back of the queue is very sparse and many who should be to the fromt are not there anyway.
Ever tried to convince a proud old lady who has worked hard all her life that she is not asking for charity by asking for her rights and dues? Well I have - far too often.
