Try to load XP and discover that XP doesn't support SATA drives . . .
Oh yes it does.
Erse oot the windae time once again, Mr P !
"Out of the box, no current Windows version, including Windows
Server 2003, supports SATA drives.
http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/41058/41058.html
and
"Windows XP does not provide drivers for all the SATA controllers,
therefore, during the installation procedure, the user must insert a
floppy with the drivers that came in the package along with the
motherboard."
http://tinyurl.com/ysryd2 (Softpedia)
and
" . . installing Windows XP on a system where you only have Serial ATA
Drives you might encounter a problem where Windows does not seem to
detect your Hard Drive and reports "No mass storage device found"
during an installation (this occurs in Windows NT and Windows 2000 as
well). This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows
XP/2K/NT . . ."
http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/faqs/kb/15,24.html
and (As you'll note from the URL, this one refers to Vista !)
"Raid and/or SATA drivers are not installed by default by the Windows
Operating system; therefore if your Raid or SATA drivers are not
installed manually at the beginning of the Windows installation
sequence, the chances are that you will not have access to your Raid
or SATA disk drive(s)."

AFAIK. There are two methods of getting Win XP to run on a SATA drive.
1) A "streamed" installation CD incorporating suitable drivers.
<Which is the route I tried but eventually gave up on. Although I
*did* have a somewhat 'buggy' install of XP at one point but it
wouldn't allow me to install either MS Office 2000 Professional
or Paint Shop Pro. At which point, I called it a day>
2) Loading the drivers from a floppy at the start of the install
when it says, "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI
or RAID driver.?
Laptops don't have floppies and until I have an O/S installed,
my USB floppy isn't much good !
But do carry on . . .
No doubt there are several thousand technical writers and
Windows 'experts', including several hundred at Redmond,
who are anxiously waiting to hear how you made this discovery
and desperate to hear your expert view on the subject . . .
