I came across this term quite often in books with a Scottish setting.
I guess it refers to a style of cottage. Could anyone here please shed
some light on this? Also does "herd" mean "shepherd" ? Thanks.
A herd is simply a herdsman so it could be a shepherd or cattleman. A
'herd's cotttage' is simply be a farm cottage inhabited by the herd. Farms
used to all have cottages, either on their own or in rows, inhabited by
the farm workers. They were tied accomodation so no rent was paid instead
it formed part of the benefits of employment. Hence if the herd left his
position then he would leave the house and the new herd would take
residence.
That's one way of putting it.
Another way of putting it is "If the farmer sacks you on a whim you and your
family instantly become homeless, so you better tug your forelock you
peasant scum".
rage at some of the goings on and ultimately got thrown out for my
"radical" views. That's why I was unable to entertain you at Eriboll
or Balnakiel, no doubt much to Sheila's relief!
