I came across this term quite often in books with a Scottish setting.
I guess it refers to a style of cottage. Could anyone here please shed
some light on this? Also does "herd" mean "shepherd" ? Thanks.
The herd's cottage wasoften small, without much beyond a fireplace
where the cooking was done. Married herds tended to get a better
arrangement. Water was usually from from a burn (creek) or a well.
Shepherds' cottages are much nicer these days! I visited a lovely one
recently - large living room with open fire (but the house is centrally
heated by a gas boiler), beautiful view through wide picture window,
satellite tv; big kitchen with all modern appliances, including
microwave and dishwasher; dining area. Downstairs bedroom wing with
large bathroom; laundry room with attached shower room; master suite
upstairs......
I'm glad to hear it. It's more than time that the ordinary folk of the
Highlands got a taste of what was once the lifestyle of the
privileged. Not that I didn't enjoy the perks, but in my youth the
contrast between families like mine and those who worked for us was
more like the era of the industrial revolution. I used to be "Master
Michael" - what a hollow honour from men old enough to be my father!
