I have a Packard-Bell Easynote about 2.5 y/o.
It has packed in. I think it is the Motherboard.

Indications are that it will cost about
£130 to fix, plus transport and insurance.

Too much when you can now get a
Laptop for under £500.

Well under it - you can get one for under £300 at a push.
