When the thinly disguised grab for the oil pipe control valves was
imminent, fully 2.5 Million UK people
According to whose count? Did Blair change his mind about invading? I
forget.
Even the police estimated 1 million and you can usualy at least double their
figures.
Hmmmm. I've spent about half an hour looking for the figures. It's amazing
the variations in estimates.
Sometimes by a factor of three or four - like the police say fifty thousand
and other sources up to 200,000.
The biggest one seems to have been Rome which is in the Guiness Book of
Records at over 3 million. The London estimates seem to vary from 1.5
million to 2.5 million. Here's one from the Grauniad that puts it in the
middle at 2 million.
"....In an ICM poll for The Guardian (14 February-16 February 2002), 6% of
people claimed that someone from their household went on the march or had
intended to. The StWC claims that this translates into 1.25 million
households and thus supports the estimate of two million people, assuming
that more than one person could come from each household....."
And whether Blair changed his mind or not is irrelevant to my point and you
know it.
At least the people let the world know where 'the people' stood.
flooded the streets of dear old London Town to protest. Everyone from
Grandmas in wheelchairs to punks in crash helmets took to the streets.
The biggest ever demonstration in British history. And, as I've said
before, that's a lot of demonstrations and a shitload of history.
The corresponding response in the 'land of the free' capital was a paltry
250,000.
According to whose count? I was there, as were my elderly parents and
in-laws. There were a *lot* more than 250,000 people there. and there were
other marches all over the country.
According to some of the posters at the time who where there - I can't
remember their screen-names and stuff I read at the time. But I've looked
for that figure too and about the only reference I can find to the numbers
involved is a solitary quote from CNN who say 'thousands'. Fat lot of use.
Maybe *you* can come up with something.
Given that the Great Satan has a population 6 times that of the UK that
constitutes a response that is little short of embarrassing.
The "Great Satan" is a lot more than than 6 times the land mass. There
were marches all over the country. How many people traveled 2,500 miles to
march in London? Where did *you* march?
Christchurch NZ. But if I had been in Scotland you can bet your life I would
have travelled to London - I've done it for a lot less important things than
an unjustified 'war'. That's about a 1000 mile round trip from Inverness.
And you have Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Philadelphia,
Richmond, Norfolk and lord knows
how many other population centres all within 500 miles of Washington.
Face it - you're a nation of wimps and fairies.
