But wait a minute. Are you saying that Mexicans are too
stupid to know they would need a plane or a ship
to get to Iceland. Another example of rampant
anti-hispanic prejudice. You should be ashamed.
So you should.

That is not what I said nor what I meant.

O.K. I shall try and explain myself and the history of the posts.
Someone posted (all posts may be paraphrased as ICBA to look back and find
the exact words), "who would want to live in the USA as opposed to
Iceland". Glenallan posted "Millions of Mexicans" . I was merely
pointing out that maybe the USA was easier to get to than Iceland. I was
not commenting on why the Mexicans didn't want to remain in Mexico, nor
was I commenting on anyone's intelligence, nor was I commenting on the
desirability of one country over another.

Also - I think a lot of people overlook that a lot of Mexicans want to get
*out* of Mexico rather than *into* the USA.
If Mexico just happened to be where Turkey is now I doubt very much if more
than a handfull of them would make it to the USA or even try.
It has nothing much to do with the USA being a 'good' country to move to -
clearly these days, with the naked hatred of 'illegals', and current
government's obscene policies, it fails on almost every criteria except
potential earnings. The migration has more to do with convenient geography,
lack of border security and extreme poverty in Mexico itself. The motivating
factor is basically money - money that they tend to send home to Mexico and
they are willing to endure the racism and relative exploitation of the only
country they can realistically get into and make at least some sort of wage
in order to try to provide for their kids or parents.
If there was an easy way to get to and remain in Iceland; with it's more
ethical government, higher standard of living, superior social services and
health care and lack of institutionalised racism, I'm pretty sure the sweat
shops, dirt fields and hysterical xenophobia of the southern US would exert
even less appeal.

A very cogent summary. We have lots of Mexicans working here in Canada
on work permits and they generally seem to be decent, hard-working
people. Their children are always dressed immaculately and are
extremely polite. As you said above, they are meticulous about sending
money home to their relatives and they don't get into trouble with the
law. It's a good deal for them, their wages are the standard rates
they keep a low profile and the ones I've spoken to seem delighted to
have "got lucky" by coming to Canada.

The US, with its usual skill at cutting its own throat had helped
hundreds of farmers into bankruptcy as Americans will not work as
stoop labourers (those who must physically stoop to harvest a crop)
and without the Mexican workers their crops are rotting in the fields
and orchards; a sad tale I've heard from several of my farmer
customers in California and elsewhere in the past few weeks; people
who would normally be sending truckloads of farm produce north to
Canada at this time of year. To me it seems like pure madness to
reject and persecute reliable dependable labour, especially as US food
stocks, especially corn (on the cob) are reaching a critical low point
I understand.

It's very poor management and those who are paying with the loss of
their businesses must be in despair.
