Surely that comes as no surprise?
Surprised me - I thought Port Moresby was in the Solomon's or somewhere
around there.
Papua New Guinea, and I didn't need to look it up. Must I do everything
around here?
At last, you've found your niche. ;-)
He'd love it there - fit right in.
Traveling incognito are you? Are you also wearing a false mustache?
No - just had a major computer crash. It's that time of year again.
Had to reload windows and every other bit of software I've added in the last year including 10 months worth of virus updates - you know the story.
Never having used anti-virus software, I don't.
Really?
I didn't for the first few years and never had any problems but all of a sudden I started getting lots of them - about five in the space of a few weeks at one point. Decided to set up a firewall and anti-virus after that.
PC-illin seems OK - it looks after itself re:updates and scans etc.
There are *very* few Linux viruses. I haven't heard of any in the wild.

Ask yourself, "If I was a virus writer would I write a virus for the most used Operating system or for the least used one"? and the answer will tell you why Linux/ Unix and so on don't have many people bothered to write virus programs for them.
That is certainly true *but* there are other reasons. The execution path in binary executables is different on *nix so you can't just slap a virus onto the end of a legitimate application and expect it to run when the legit application is called. Also, even if you could pull this off, it wouldn't run in root space (unless the user is an idiot running as root) so it wouldn't affect the OS or restart at boot time, it also couldn't affect the boot sector. Also, I have yet to see a network application: news reader, email client, web browser etc... in *nix that would actually *execute* selected posts or email attachments. In short: Yes, it is /possible/ to write a virus for *nix and yes, *nix doesn't have the user base *but* anyone with the ability to actually write a 'successfull' virus for *nix would be too busy making piles of money working for Google, Microsoft, Sun, HP or more likely, his/her own company. A lot of winders viruses are written (or modified) by 'script kiddies'. BTW, Mac OS X has a BSD Unix kernel and has the same protections.

The problem winders has had, so far, is ineffective security protection. Gates chose this path of ease of use for the average user because he didn't understand the potential of networking properly in the early days. Back then, the internet *was* *nix, VAX and various other mainframe and mini OSs. Vista, hopefully, may solve this problem but it's pretty new and raw. A lot of US government agencies have banned it's use, probably until a few service packs and patches have fixed most of the major bugs.

I was just about to post exactly the same thing.

Of course you were.
