Time for yet another purge.

Ok, Dicks on table - just what is considered 'on-topic' and
acceptable
to the so-called 'regulars'?
What about endless ranting about Iraq by Highlander - is that ok?
Relevant to Scotland? Whats the diff between that and some nutter
who
raves on about Australia orAWSwho has an air of superiority - we
know he is the best gardener in Ozz but that hardly qualifies him
as
one of the intelligencia now does it!!
Nobody is 'better' than anybody else, we all have our opinions, a
NG
is like real life you take it or leave it.The way some of you go on
you would think a NG was your own personal property - your own
front
garden! Get a life..

Obviously you aren't aware that Scotland has soldiers fighting in
Iraq; a matter of interest to many Scots. I have no idea where you
post from and given the quality of your posts, I have no interest in
finding out, especially as your sig translates as "Kingof Pricks";
one of your more successful attempts to catch our attention.

As for nobody being better than anyone else, you seem to be
suffering
from some sort of delusion that you matter and that we're all
waiting
breathlessly for your next pedestrian, plodding post.

This used to be the best group on the Internet, back in the 1990s.
but
now it has become a rubbish tip for idiots like you who think they
have something to say that the adults want to read.

Your remarks aboutAWSdemonstrate your unfamiliarity with the various
personalities in SCS. Your arrogance suggests that you're an
American.
Your posts suggest that alt.***.head is where you will find company
more suited to your intellectual level.

Good day and good bye.

Actually I didn't say that commenting on Iraq was a bad thing now did
I? You have just jumped to conclusions and had a typical un-educated
knee-jerk reaction.

No one but a boorish clod could construe that to be anything other
than an insulting remark.

Actually I didn't say that commenting on Iraq was a bad thing now did
I?

Now you try to crawl out of the corner you just crawled into.

<rest snipped because this is not a children's playground>

Off you go wee man - it's time for your beddy-byes.

HIGHLANDER HAS ANOTHER ONE ON THE HOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Highlander, ever anxious to keep up with current fashion, is waiting
for his Virginia State mail order SWD M-11/9 mm machine pistol to
arrive before visiting those posters whom he has pinpointed as
requiring "instant attitude adjustment".

Savour the love; the caring...

Highlander, your Dirk would inspire a good deal more shock and awe that
would a pistol.
Pistols have so little finesse

True, but I don't want to be branded as a Dirk Nut...

Not to digress but wasn't "Dirk" a common Brit name once upon a time?
I seem to remember some Brit actor by that name.

Dirk Bogart. His roots were Dutch.

In the book "Taipan" the main (Scottish) character was called Dirk
Struan.

However, it's an unlikely name for a Scot, just as Tomahawk Caine
would be an unusual name for you!

I might add that in Cantonese, Taipan is actually the word(s) used for
someone who runs a brothel - "Big Pimp"!

Tai means big, as in typhoon (Tai fung - Big Wind) or Fung Soei; (Feng
Shui in Mandarin) - wind and water; the art of geomancy; a major part
of Chinese belief in the creation of harmonious surroundings.

There is actually no such language as Chinese, but over 50 languages
and a staggering 2,548 dialects; most of which are not mutually
intelligible.

The Beijing Guanhua dialect (Mandarin) is the official language of
China. The oldest language, closest to the original Han language is
probably Cantonese. They are about as different from each other as
Scots is from Dutch - words in each language can be recognized by
speakers of the other language, but mutual conversation is not
possible.

This is not necesssarily a barrier, as Chinese characters are mutually
understood; each representing a word. So, if you can't understand
someone's language or dialect, you can write notes to each other for
complete understanding, just as the numbers - 1,2,3,4,5, etc. may not
sound like each other in different languages, but always have the same
meaning. Some limited understanding is also possible using Japanese
characters, which were borrowed from Chinese, but time has altered
many meanings and as Japanese, like Korean, Ethiopian and Cherokee
uses a form of alphabet called a syllabary - a set of written symbols
that represent (or approximate) syllables, which make up words -
communication is not easy.

Just to show you how lucky Europeans are, Chinese people have to learn
about 5,000 characters - compared to English's 26 - to read a daily
newspaper and around 15,000 to read a book. This means that schooling
takes much longer than in Europe and at the coolie level, some are
funtionally illiterate except for the commonest characters, having
long since forgotten what they learned at school. Scholarship
therefore is venerated.

I kmight add that most Europeans in fact know dozens of letters when
uppercase, lowercase and handwritten letters and all their variations
are taken into account.

Finally, like hieroglyphics, many characters (around 100) are tiny
pictures and in combination can have various meanings. Thus the
characters for man and tree placed together mean "rest"; roof and pig
means "home". One character which is a simple drawing of an 18th
century Royal Navy Marine holding a musket means English - Ying in
Cantonese and Mandarin.

Most characters have been so refined over the centuries that their
original picture form can no longer be guessed.

Chinese writing however, is also an elegant art form, like Italic
writing, often seen in the form of a proverb or a line of poetry
painted on a vase, an artistic skill much admired in both China and
Japan.

One of the more startling surprises I've enountered locally was a
pretty young Chinese lady who had a Ph.D in Latin and its variations
over the time frame of the Roman Empire. As she pointed out, rather
tartly, there is no legal prohibition against Chinese studying western
culture! Needless to say, she stole my heart away as we talked about
languages!
