The other day I was looking at an Oor Wullie strip from the Fifties -
one concerning Hogmanay.
I noticed that hanging from the various paper-chains in the Wullie's
house was a fish, and this reminded me of a documentary I'd seen years
ago about old Scottish New Year traditions, that mentioned how most
houses would hang up a paper fish. But I've completely forgotten what
it said about the significance of this ritual.
Can anyone enlighten me about this? And does it still happen in parts
of Scotland ?
I don't remember ever noticing that! Mind you, I've never been to a
Lowland Hogmanay, only Highland ones, so it may be a unique Lowland
custom.
