Not that I'm aware of. I'm not sure who I would want to be victorious
over -
Well, traditionally, isn't it supposed to be
the Angles of Northumbria? Are there
any still around?
I'm a little confused over this legend/history! You know the Picts fighting
and defeating Athelstane of Northumbria in 832AD. The trouble is that as far
as I can see there was no and never has been a King Athelstane of
Northumbria. Eanred ruled Northumbria from 810 to 841 and no-one remotely
called Athelstan seems to have pre or post dated him. There was an Athelstan
of Wessex and Mercia who succeeded to the Kingdom of York (which included
part of Northumbria and basically made him King of England) but that was a
century later, after the Pictish period as such, and he had a famous victory
at Brunanburh. I'm not at home to check but maybe someone can clear this up.
Where does the legend come from and is it based on anything of substance?
Perhaps Athelstaneford was named for some other reason; an actual battle did
happen against some other king in 832; and the legend about Athelstan of
Northumbria grew by mistake!
