In commemoration of the Auld Alliance, at sunrise I participated in the
raising of the French Tricolor, toasted the event with a mug of
cafe-au-lait (French Roast) and a croissant and woke up the rest of the
neighborhood ("Abner! That nut from down the street is raising that
surrender monkey flag again! Call the cops!") with a spirited "a
capella" rendition of "La Marseillaise" accompanied by my neighbor,

This is the song the Foreign Legion sang as they waited to be shipped
to France at the end of the Algerian War in 1962. The little Sparrow
was believed to be partly Berber, a member of the Kabyle tribe in
Algeria, but she was born in Belleville, (20ème arrondisement) in
Paris, an Algerian slum quarter where I used to stay because I loved
the atmosphere. It was only a short distance from Père Lachaise
cemetery which has facinating gravestones, such as Oscar Wilde's.

also Jim Morrison's, although Wilde's is esthetically pleasing (which
would have made him content) while Morrison's is notable only for the
person under it.
