How Temperatures Affect the Scottish:

40 degrees: Californian shiver uncontrollably, people in Scotland
sunbathe.

20 degrees: People in Florida wear coats, gloves and wool hats, Scots
throw on a t-shirt.

zero degrees: English landlords turn the heating on, people in Scotland
have a last minute barbecue.

minus 10 degrees: People in Miami are extinct, people in Scotland go
for a dip in the sea.

minus 20 degrees: Californians move to Mexico, people in Scotland throw
on a light jacket.

minus 80 degrees: Polar Bears evacuate the arctic, Scottish Boy Scouts
postpone winter survival exercises until it gets cold enough.

minus 100 degrees: Santa Claus abandons the North Pole, people in
Scotland wear a vest.

minus 500 degrees: Hell Freezes Over. Scots support England in the
World Cup

Mike

Cute, Mike. But you folks in Scotland don't know what cold, or hot for
that matter, is. Record low in Scotland is -027.2C. Of all the states in
the US, only Florida and Delaware fail to meet or exceed that number.
Record High is 32.9C and every state in the US exceeds that.

I'd venture that Hawaii has failed to reach -27C as well. Anyway,
temperature extremes are interesting. My stay in Colorado involved some
weird days where there was ice to scrape off the car in the morning, and
heat in the same afternoon which required jacket removal. Not to mention the
snow which dries up without melting...

In Scotland, we don't have extremes of temperature as can be found in a
continental climate, but we do claim to have some severe winter storms and
an appalling greyness for much of the year. :-)

On a similar note; it has recently been suggested that global warming,
in all its ramifications, could result in the "Gulf Stream" being cut off
from the UK because of Greenlandic glacial (fresh) meltwater flowing over
the top of it. This means that some continental winters could be on their
way here.
